Earlier NSS has successfully completed HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme by NACO Govt. of India for a period of ten years 2000 to 2009, in this we have reduced the presence of HIV by adopting different strategies like condom promotion, behavior change, health access. In condom promotion we are first place in entire state. Keeping all this in mind, NSS has come across many people among the target population who are suffering from diabetic disorder.
Hence we interacted with stakeholders and others, we observed the need of adopt this area to address this problem. NSS made a survey in this context with diabetic patients and pre-diabetics.
Diabetes in Nalgonda / Mahbubnagar Districts in Telangana
We are quite aware that Diabetics is a huge problem in INDIA and also in our target districts of Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar. We started capacity building for 200 volunteers, as before starting to work with diabetes problem, first they need to have basic knowledge about diabetes disorder with it's symptoms.
We are from 2014 onwards as per action plan made by management we had number of meetings with staff, volunteers and specially with stake holders.
Diabetes Awareness Camps
First year in 2014 we organised diabetes awareness camps as a large scale to reach massive public in Nalgonda district slum areas, tribal villages, rural population and also hilly areas. We involved local leaders, Doctors, Mahila Sanghas, Youth Teachers including departmental staff who are available at camp area. We got good response. These camps helped to identify stakeholder approximate Diabetic patients.
Diabetes Treatment Support
We started in second year 2015 to approach the Diabetic patients. We prepared a list of patients with their stage and diagnose of diabetic level including lab reports. We are mobilising different sections of community to address this problem by providing doorstep check-up and free medicine at least nominal price this process going on.
Volunteers for Supporting Diabetics
The year of 2016 we made a good with stake holder or patients. We providing training for volunteers in diabetic and support services with support of Indian Council of diabetic Care from Bengaluru, India. They charging minimum for this service. We are organising free diabetes screening camps in micro remote areas of Nalgonda. Our volunteers reaching entire villages of the district corners.
Diabetics Project Support
Now we are facing burden of transport, logistics arrangement, Mobile screening equipment, Lab technicians, Expert Doctors and medicines. We are trying out level best for this.
Yoga for Diabetes
Last two years we observing yoga and meditation therapy for diabetic patients we got tremendous experience. Out of 20 members 10 are normal stage without use of diabetic medicine. We applied yoga and meditation therapy in 35 prisoners in a jail, they begin to talk about moral values instead of murders and robberies.
Keeping all this in view the organisation planning to work on this subject.
